#1. Whiplash
Director: Damien Chazelle
Year: 2015

whiplash2

So Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash has claimed the top spot in our countdown and it’s without a doubt a worthy winner. For a long time it was looking like Christopher Nolan’s Inception was going to be the clear winner but the competition from Chazelle’s musical drama proved too much, more than likely the fear of J.K. Simmons Fletcher had something to do with it!

Our final countdown is an amalgamation of 11 individual lists. There was a total of 440 different films mentioned across these lists and 10 different films were placed at the top spot. The only film to appear at number 1 more than once was our eventual winner Whiplash, which appeared at the top of 2 individual lists.

There were a total of 80 films that only appeared once throughout all of the lists, we’re calling these our wildcards. The highest scoring wildcard was Zhang Yimou’s Chinese period film Shadow, which managed to top one of the lists submitted but full points from one contributor was not enough to see it onto the final Top 100. Other high scoring wildcards included, Birds of Passage, Can You Ever Forgive Me?, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again and The Babadook. Alternatively our lowest scoring wildcards were Brawl in Cell Block 99, Brigsby Bear, Drive Angry, Ocean’s 8 and Wish I Was Here all placing at number 100 on 5 different lists. There was also no film in the final Top 100 that appeared on every single list.

There was a total of 5 foreign films that made the final Top 100 but as to be expected in such a strong decade for the superhero genre it was these films that dominated it most. With a total of 12 superhero films in the Top 100 it’s clear that this will be a decade remembered for the strength of its superhero films.

In terms of directors, sadly there was a distinct lack of female made films here, with only 3 making the final Top 100. There will be many reasons for this including a limited diversity of contributors, the difference in amount of male/female made films in this decade and potentially unchallenged viewing habits. As we know there are countless excellent films from this decade with female directors at their helm so we want to recommend some now; The Babadook, Detroit, The Invitation, Capernaum, The Miseducation of Cameron Post, Selma, The Farewell, Only You, A Bump Along the Way, Judy and Punch, Wonder Woman, Hustlers, Little Women, Ordinary Love, American Honey, The Nightingale, Blinded by the Light, Hail Satan? and Can You Ever Forgive Me?

16 different directors appeared twice or more in the final Top 100 but it was Christopher Nolan, Denis Villeneuve and The Russo Brothers who appeared most, all appearing 4 times within the final Top 100. All of Villeneuve’s appearance’s were in the Top 50. Other over-achievers of the decade according to our list included Damien Chazelle, Martin Scorsese and Rian Johnson who all had 3 films make it to the Top 100.

When it came to the breakdown of individual years the second half of the decade proved much more popular with 2018 having most entries on our list with 18. The least popular year was 2013 only managing to have 4 films in the final countdown. This divide sparks an interesting debate on why there’s such a difference throughout the years. Is it as simple as a difference in quality? We think not, such factors as memory, the popularity of film as a whole and increased exposure to film all have to play a part and whilst we can’t offer any conclusions it’s still a fun one to ponder over.

A final thank you to all our wonderful contributors, it was no small task to put together a ranked 100 and we really appreicate all those who did so. We hope you enjoyed contributing and we encourage you to discuss the results and continue to celebrate a dazzling decade of cinema!

Our Contributors:
Simon Appleton, Troy Balmayer, Jakob Lewis Barnes, Peter Brown, Hamish Calvert, Conor Crooks, Owen Dumigan, Nathan Osborne, Eamonn Rafferty, Jed Wagman and Christopher Wilson.

A special thank you to Peter Brown who was essential in fleshing out the initial idea, number crunching and for providing general support and advice.
