Pitch Perfect 3

(spoiler free)

The Bellas are back and ‘aca’ at it again for the culmination of the ‘Pitch Perfect’ trilogy. This time round the girls are fresh from college and attempting to maneuver the difficulties of the real world. Feeling the strain of this the Bellas reunite ending up on an overseas USO tour and involved in a competition to become the opening act for DJ Khaled. Will this reunion tour hit the high notes or can the curtain not come down fast enough?

Well considering that this series started off about college acapella competitions it’s quite surprising that it’s now onto it’s third film.  As you might expect the narrative here does seem quite stretched with not the strongest of plots. There’s several quite odd side stories going on as well but overall it’s all executed to an adequate standard and results in easy, light entertainment. As always the film features several musical performances from the bellas and whilst these aren’t the best of the series there are some enjoyable moments with a rendition of a certain Britney Spears classic probably being the highlight.

Hand in hand with the musical moments in the ‘Pitch Perfect’ films usually comes comedy, often courtesy of Rebel Wilson’s Fat Amy. It’s more of the same this time around with this element being slightly above average but not really presenting anything that memorable. The performances of the the returning cast are as spirited as ever and this group appear to really enjoy working together which transpires into their on screen chemistry. Elizabeth Banks & John Michael Higgins return as the most politically incorrect commentators in existence, Gail & John, in typically hilarious fashion. This pair have always been the greatest thing about this series consistently getting the biggest laughs and rightly so. If they ever want to revive this series of films a Gail & John spinoff is the only way forward.

So while there definitely doesn’t need to a third movie in this series there is enough entertainment in ‘Pitch Perfect 3’ to warrant a watch. If you haven’t enjoyed the previous films this threequel won’t change that. However if you’ve been a fan of the past installments you’ll most likely be able to have a good time here. There’s some toe-tapping tunes and enough laughs to hold your attention but as always it’s worth it alone for John & Gail’s savage commentary.
