The Commuter

The Liam Neeson action flick is a genre of it’s own. Since the success of ‘Taken’ back in 2008 we’ve (mostly) enjoyed a decade of the more mature action star fighting terrorists, criminals and even on one occasion, wolves. However, with comments from the main man himself about leaving the genre behind, his latest foray into the genre, ‘The Commuter’ might be one of his last. Presented with a strange proposition by a mysterious woman on his daily commute, Neeson’s character quickly becomes mixed up in some seriously dangerous dealings.

‘The Commuter’ sees Neeson reunite with director Jaume Collet-Serra who he’s previously worked with three times (‘Unknown’, ‘Non-Stop’, ‘Run All Night’). The basic premise is quite similar to these previous films, Neeson is presented with a predicament of sorts and he must use his “particular set of skills’ to save the day. The more specific narrative here is one of the most farfetched we’ve seen from this pairing but enough is done to make it work. The mystery element to the story is well worked and allows the audience to become involved making for some solid popcorn entertainment. The film is never slow but it somewhat lacks the usually constant thrills & suspense of a Collet-Serra picture, that is until the finale. It’s here that the film truly cranks it up a notch and the viewers investment is rewarded with an action packed climax.

Most of the characters exist only to further the plot or for the purpose of exposition, this might bother some viewers however Neeson is the pulling power here and it’s him who audiences will be there to see. He’s already proved himself in this genre countless times before and he shows no sign of wavering. He’s the likeable everyday kind of guy who it’s easy to route for but he also wholeheartedly delivers with every single punch showcasing just why he’s succeeded in action heavy roles like these for ten years now. Some of the bigger names in the supporting cast include; Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga & Sam Neill. None of them get the chance to be particularly memorable but their presence is enjoyable enough much the same as the various different passengers on the train.

Ultimately, ‘The Commuter’, is a middle of the road (or track) Neeson action flick but it’s still more than serviceable entertainment. It isn’t Collet-Serra’s best collaboration with Neeson either but it makes for a refreshing break from an otherwise rather awards heavy release schedule for January. Grab a ticket, hop on and enjoy the ride. With Neeson at the helm of yet another adrenaline filled action movie it would be hard not to have at least a little bit of fun with ‘The Commuter’.
