Journey’s End

(spoiler free)

‘Journey’s End’ is a film adaptation of the play of the same name by R. C. Sherriff. His play has already had several other adaptations, with this latest offering being the fifth in total. The story focuses on a group of British Officers who are fulfilling their duty on the front line in the trenches during the final year of WWI awaiting an imminent German attack. The film features an all star British cast and was produced as part of the First World War centenary.

The film is less concerned with the overarching story of war or even depicting the brutal atrocities it caused instead homing in on the characters within the narrative. It’s obvious to see that this film is adapted from a play as the secluded setting of the trenches lends itself very well to the stage. It could have been a worry but thankfully this claustrophobic setting never becomes tiresome. On occasions, two specifically, the narrative does allow for actual scenes of warfare and these moments hold great drama and suspense, largely due to the careful building of momentum that comes before them. However the actual execution of these sequences, the first in particular isn’t that great. The way in which these scenes were filmed makes it incredibly hard to see what is actually happening. It could be argued that this style of filming is representative of the frantic and unpredictable nature of war but this can be achieved whilst also presenting clear visuals for audiences.

That careful building of momentum which I mentioned comes as a result of the fantastic writing and strong performances. The range of officers and variety of personalities makes for a very interesting make-up of characters and the way they interact with each other even more so. The cast are all tremendous and showcase men from all walks of life coming together to protect their country. Sam Claflin plays the commanding Officer, Captain Stanhope and continues his stellar form after last year’s WWII drama, ‘Their Finest’. His work here could well rival his performance from last year for his career best as he further proves what a capable leading man he is. The remainder of the cast fulfill their roles incredibly well and contribute to the especially emotional tone of the film. It’s this tone that creates such suspense and drama in the action sequences and that will keep audiences engaged despite the limited setting.

Ultimately, ‘Journey’s End’ is a touching tribute to those men who sacrificed so much to serve their country. It’s an insight into the mentality of these men and the battles they faced when they weren’t’ engaged in direct warfare with the enemy but instead with their own fears and demons. Written with a real thoughtfulness and performed excellently, ‘Journey’s End’ is a captivating and heartfelt drama which will make audiences glad of it’s transition from stage to screen.
