(spoiler free)
‘Last Flag Flying’ is the latest film from director, Richard Linklater. The screenplay was written by Linklater & Darryl Poniscan who’s novel the film is based on. It follows three Vietnam War veterans who are reunited after decades apart when Steve Carell’s character, Doc, experiences a personal tragedy.
The film is essentially a road trip movie and what a trio of companions it has in the shape of Steve Carell, Bryan Cranston & Laurence Fishburne. These three actors deliver fantastic performances, giving everything that the screenplay demands of them. Each of their turns evokes heart & humour on countless occasions and the chemistry that they share is wonderful to witness. Even the smaller fleeting performances add real quality to the film and shouldn’t go unnoticed. However, it is the central trio’s endearing chemistry which remains the major factor in making the film work over it’s long running time.
There’s no denying that the narrative is slow moving and the length of the picture as a whole will be an issue for some viewers. Despite this the strength of the character dialogue will be more than ample for most. The screenplay is rich with interesting discussions about war, god, family and much more which always offer a great level of intrigue for viewers. Furthermore, these conversations are often laced with tear inducing comedy and emotion, particularly the comedy which on one occasion had me in hysterics. The specific sequences entirely devoted to producing comedy, drama or emotion are also consistently effective and help to sustain the slow yet steady pace of the film.
‘Last Flag Flying’ is a thoroughly enjoyable ride with the main cast being an absolute joy to be in company with. It’s just such a lovely story about family and friends and often demonstrates the best of humanity always in a wholly entertaining fashion. Despite the fact that it’s only February, Linklater’s efforts here are still sure to be a highlight come the end of the cinematic year.
