Deadpool 2

After finally doing justice to the much loved comic book character with a ‘Deadpool’ origin story in 2016, Ryan Reynolds is back for the merc with a mouth’s big bad sequel. With help from a whole host of new and returning faces he’s surely hoping to recreate the success of the first film and in typically outlandish fashion too. After the intense experience that was ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, ‘Deadpool 2’ would hopefully offer a more laid back and accessibly entertaining Marvel outing, especially for those who haven’t quite recovered from Thanos’ inter-galactic antics only weeks previous.

Speaking of Thanos, Marvel’s latest bad guy Josh Brolin seemingly can’t get enough of beating up our favourite superheroes as he flexes his villainous muscles here once more as mutant solider Cable. He’s a great presence in this sequel and blends well with Reynold’s Deadpool never causing a clash of tones which could often have been the case. Zaxie Beetz is another of the newcomers as Domino, a fierce mutant with a rather unique superpower which I’ll leave for you to find out, but it’s one of the most fun and creative seen on screen to date. She’s more than a match for Reynolds and Wade Wilson and effortlessly fits into this franchise. ‘The Hunt for the Wilderpeople’ star Julian Dennison completes the main trio of new talent recruited for this sequel and much like his previous film he adds a lot of humour. He struggles somewhat, slipping in and out of his natural accent but his comedic, and dramatic performance, for that matter makes this easy to overlook. Returning characters like Blind Al and taxi driver Dopinder receive the right amount of focus and end up delivering many of the funniest moments in the film. This is especially the case for Dopinder, Karan Soni excels in the role and hopefully he’ll continue to be a Deadpool regular. Of course, finally, there is Mr. Reynolds himself who gives his all once more to the role which wholly belongs to him. His performance is just as good as the first time around, in ‘Deadpool’ that is not ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ but you knew that anyway and he continues to sell everything these films are about.

The story for this next chapter of Deadpool is somewhat scattered and unfocused, at least in the beginning as the film comes across as a tad aimless. This isn’t so much of a problem as most of the narrative beats are simply a vehicle for the comedy. Once the main plot is ironed out it’s a rather simple one but this definitely works and the smaller scale is refreshing amongst the genre. It’s sometimes easy to forget how good the action is amongst the film’s main feature, it’s comedy. Nonetheless, this sequel manages to blend the brutal violence with the fun action incredibly well and we’re treated to some fantastic sequences throughout. There’s simply no denying though, these films get bums in seats for one main reason and that is because they make audiences laugh. Thankfully and pivotal to it’s success, ‘Deadpool 2’ delivers a consistent level of comedy from start to finish. It has a few standout sequences which will have audiences howling with laughter but its variety of comedic techniques ranging from pop culture references to clever script work to more basic physical humour mean that viewers will spend little time without at least a grin on their faces.

‘Deadpool 2’ is much the same as the original film, in that it blends a unique type of comedy for this genre with obscene violence and superhero action. It’s successful in adding more characters to this crude corner of the Marvel universe and crafting an entertaining experience with them. Without the surprise of how brash the original film was this sequel maybe seems like just a re-run of that, and in many ways it is, however that lack of shock-value shouldn’t take away from what’s a really solid sequel and the continuation of one of the best passion projects seen in recent blockbuster cinema.
