Netflix is killing the game when it comes to rom-coms and after the success of ‘All The Boys I’ve Loved Before’ it’s no surprise they have another winner on their hands in the form of ‘Sierra Burgess Is a Loser’. Starring Shannon Purser of ‘Stranger Things’ and the ultimate heartthrob Noah Centineo from ‘All The Boys I’ve Loved Before’ comes this adorable, lighthearted comedy for the ages.

It’s seriously so adorable that there aren’t enough adjectives to quite describe how one feels after watching it. Based on the Cyrano de Bergerac play, this Netflix movie follows the story of Sierra, who accidentally ends up in a cat-fishing situation with one of the cute football players, Jamey (Centineo) at school.

Without giving too much away, identities are confused and it propels the story into a feel good story we can all relate to and fall in love with. Purser shines as the awkward girl many of us were at some point in time during high school. Her character’s feelings, her out-of-place moments, and the struggle to fit into the mold of “perfection” is conveyed effortlessly by Purser and it was great to see her take the lead in this manner.

‘Sierra Burgess Is a Loser’ does something many rom-coms often shy away from and that is making the jock crush someone with more substance and personality. Quite often the jock is illustrated as a dumb, aloof individual and there is never any basis for why someone has a crush on them. However, Centineo’s Jamey is someone all the viewers will fall for. He loves to stare at the night sky and admire the stars, he spends time with his partially deaf brother and learned sign language to make sure he can communicate with him, and can carry conversation for hours about meaningful things. Who wouldn’t fall in love with this guy?

The duo of Centineo and Purser really makes this movie what it is and it’s the most entertaining aspect of it. There is something so raw and honest about their story and in a time where rom-coms are making a hardcore comeback, this movie will be the one of the ones that stand out the most.

Other notable characters in the movie are Sierra’s best friend Dan (RJ Cyler), and Veronica (Kristine Froseth), a cheerleader that helps Sierra catfish Jamey. These characters in combination with Jamey and Sierra make up the heart of this lovable, sentimental, heartfelt movie. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and you’ll find yourself wishing you could go back in time and feel that puppy love that high school would often bring with crushes. If rom-coms are your thing, then ‘Sierra Burgess Is a Loser’ is the movie for you!
