Second Act

‘Second Act’ sees singer and actress Jennifer Lopez return to the big screen for her first live action film in around four years. She plays Maya Vargas a woman struggling to achieve her career aspirations, that is until her friend’s son unbeknownst to her applies her for several different corporate positions landing her an important interview. Directed by Peter Segal, known best for his classic Adam Sandler comedies like ‘Anger Management’ and ’50 First Dates’ how would he cope with Jenny from the block in the big city?

In its beginnings and for large sections of its running time this film is unashamedly feel good. Sure, it’s cheesy but it knows what kind of film it is and never tries to be anything more. It treads on the right side of cringey and keeps audiences entertained with its simple and often endearing comedy. It’s this comedy that is essential for the success of the film as the narrative is a tad predictable and it feels longer than it actually is. However, these are only small issues as this natural humour present in the screenplay means the film never becomes tiresome excusing any possible pacing problems.

J-Lo is an incredibly charismatic lead and it’s so easy to root for her character. She brings the heart and the humour nessecary to make her character work, sticking it to the man and refusing to let anyone limit her potential. The supporting cast are a real joy to watch too and largely responsible for why the comedy lands so well. Lead Remini who plays Maya’s best friend, Joan is hysterical and steals every scene she’s in. She isn’t the only comic relief though as the film is full of funny side characters who create a fantastic ensemble making ‘Second Act’ effortlessly enjoyable. There are several more dramatic storylines included in the film too, and whilst not as appealing as the comedy these plot threads do blend well with the humour and will be effective for a lot of viewers.

Segal has delivered a cliched and cheesy crowd pleaser, and audiences who know that this is their kind of film won’t be disappointed. It’s a simple story filled with unapologetic humanity, heart and humour mixed together in an infectious manner. Fronted by the Lopez’s charming performance and complimented by her weird and wonderful supporting ensemble, ‘Second Act’ is a sweet, but not sickly, Sunday afternoon movie sure to succeed.
