Ready or Not

Ready or Not Film

(spoiler free)

From directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett comes new black comedy horror film, ‘Ready or Not’. The film stars Samara Weaving, who you might have seen in Netflix horror ‘The Babysitter’ or popular Aussie soap ‘Home and Away’. She plays a newlywed set to join the disgustingly wealthy Le Domas family. However before becoming an official member she has to partake in a mysterious family tradition, giving a whole new meaning to family games night!

The premise established from screenwriters Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy is mad to say the least, think ‘Game Night’ meets ‘You’re Next’ and you’re maybe about halfway to what ‘Ready or Not’ is! To enjoy the film it’s essential that you enter into the silliness of it all but this is made easy thanks to the intriguing mystery that gradually unravels itself throughout the narrative. This is balanced nicely with the sequences of violent action and suspense that are a constant throughout the screenplay. It’s the film’s third act that will make or break the experience for many viewers though. Whilst some might not like the direction it takes most will be able to appreicate the ambition coupled with the escalated levels of violence and the peak of the film’s comedy, culminating in a climax fit to rival even the best wedding night.

Whilst the comedy really hits in the final moments of ‘Ready or Not’ it could have been a stronger presence throughout the main body of the film which would have helped elevate it to a greater standard. However, the absurdness of the premise alone is enough to keep audiences amused. In addition to this the ensemble cast make for a very watchable group of characters, being played by the likes of Adam Brody, Andie MacDowell and Henry Czerny to name a few. Although, despite the entertaining collection of performers here none manage to out do Weaving who never lets anyone steal the spotlight, after all it is her character’s special day and all eyes are most definitely on her. She’s a formidable lead, proving convincing in all aspects of her performance, giving Uma Thurman’s iconic bride a serious run for her money!

Ultimately ‘Ready or Not’ takes its far-fetched premise, runs with it and never looks back, and audiences should do the same. The film’s utter insanity is anchored brilliantly by Weaving’s fantastic leading turn entering her into a fine sisterhood of scream queens that have come before her. The combination of this performance and the bonkers plot is a marriage made in B-movie, horror heaven and if you’re willing to take the film for better and for worse ‘Ready or Not’ will go off without a hitch.
